Detox Your Home This New Year

Whether we keep them or not, most of us make resolutions each January. Our home and work environment are significant to our wellness, and after a long festive season, we think a good detox of the house is an excellent January “to do” task. To lend a helping hand with your plans, we’ve developed this essential guide to help your New Year and New Home resolutions.

You don’t need to make significant renovations to detox your home, although there’s no doubt that a coat of paint will refresh any room. You must declutter and organise accordingly before you think about a big paint job. Our detox strategy involves a pre-spring clean clear-out, starting with a deep breath, so pick a dry day and throw open the windows for a good dose of fresh air.

Shelves & Boxes

Something as simple as a shelf over a radiator can effectively provide your home with a fresh new look. Use storage boxes in cube shelving to brighten up a dull wall and help get bits and pieces out of the way. Floor or corner cabinets are great for small rooms, especially within any bathroom or pantry. If you haven’t got under-bed storage or a storage ottoman, you might want to invest in a set of drawers. Even if the drawer isn’t readily accessible for everyday items, storing your un-worn Summer clothes in a vacuum bag under the bed is out of sight, out of mind and clutter-free. Looking to help keep your little one’s play area or bedroom tidy? Why not check out our extensive selection of children’s storage and other kids bedroom & nursery essentials.

Home Storage Solutions Drawers

Declutter

Books, paperwork, and stationery must-haves are the worst culprits for cluttering up the house or office space. Keep your clutter off frequently used surfaces and in their proper place with help from the right storage option – whether it’s a drawer, a filing cabinet or a computer desk. If you keep your paperwork up to date, it shouldn’t spill out where it’s not wanted. Even an old shoebox in a drawer can keep your paperwork organised and easily accessible. Wall space is often the least utilised space in our homes, so the best solution for books on counters is shelving, be it on the wall or free-standing. Another clever idea for decluttering is to put a cabinet on the wall and double its usefulness around the home by making the doors a pinboard for notes and lists.

Coats & Shoes

Shoe racks can be bulky, and many prefer baskets for storing shoes because they’re not necessarily all in the same place. A basket of shoes can be kept in your wardrobe's often unused floor space. Your hall or porch can often get cluttered in Winter because of bulky coats, scarves, and footwear. A tremendous space-saving tip is to use hangers, hooks, or even space-saving stands to help coats, hats, and jackets lie flatter. If you’ve got space, a shoe bench is a great idea that combines storage and a seat for putting on and taking off shoes.
