What is a Die Cutting Machine?

The main purpose of a die cutting machine is to apply your chosen die to the surface of any material with enough force to cut or emboss the given shape into the paper, cardstock, or felt etc. Handy die cutting starter kits are available to help point you in the right direction, excellent for beginners looking to have a go at a new craft.

What are Dies?

With the two most common types of dies being either steel-rule or thin metal, there are plenty of options out there to help bring your next craft creation to life. Thin metal dies are made of etched metal and often have their centres already cut-out. These are the best option for those looking to trace out their design with the cutting edge.

On the other hand, steel-rule dies act more like biscuit cutters when it comes to duplicating patterns. Perfect for attaching to a sturdy base, these types of dies are often protected by foam edging.

With an array of different dies available, whether you're after floral edging, sensational scenes, sweet greetings or adorable animal-themed designs, you can add fun details to your arts and crafts projects with ease.

Die Cutting Tips:

  • Always double check that your chosen dies are compatible with your machine before use

  • When only cutting one or two dies at a time, be sure to place them towards to outer edges of the plates to avoid added pressure on the machine

  • Try cutting un-themed dies with different coloured materials - this may help your project look completely different

  • Always double check the thickness of the card/material before placing into the machine

Project Ideas:

If you're in possession of a die cutting machine, then the possibilities really are endless! From greetings cards to invitations, handmade bunting banners to craft tags, there are plenty of projects out there waiting to be tackled. Looking to create birthday, anniversary, and other celebratory cards that are sure to impress? Why not use your newly acquired Die Cutting skills to produce intricately layered cards that open-up to reveal stunning scenes.
