How to Clean Your Mirrors

Cleaning a mirror is one of those household tasks that sounds simple but can be surprisingly tricky. Streaks are the most common complaint, and we’ve got some ideas on how to make buffing those mirrors easy and streak-free.

What You Need

The Method

1. Pour one-quarter white vinegar into your spray bottle with three-quarters water. Use half vinegar and half water if your mirror is particularly grimy with makeup, toothpaste, soap, limescale, etc.

2. Spray the solution straight onto your mirror or the microfibre cloth, and start wiping in an up-and-down or side-to-side motion. It’s best to do this before the solution begins to dry, so ensure you’re ready to clean immediately.

3. Spot clean difficult areas, such as corners, the frame, or areas behind taps, with the toothbrush or cotton bud and the vinegar solution.

4. Dry the mirror with a clean, dry microfibre cloth by wiping it in the same direction as you had with the cleaning solution.

5. Stand away from the mirror and look at it from different angles to check for streaks. If you still find streaks, spot clean the area with a little of your homemade window cleaner.

Other Tips

1. A squeegee can help reduce streaks if your mirror doesn’t require a little elbow grease. Spray the solution onto the mirror and use the squeegee to wipe it down, moving it in a zig-zag formation. Use a microfibre cloth to catch and clean any drips.

2. Add a little lemon juice to your cleaning solution if you need more cleaning power.

3. Avoid using paper towels and harsh scrubbing brushes. Paper towels can leave fibres sticking to your mirror, whilst rough brushes can scratch your mirror.

4. To stop your mirror from fogging for up to two weeks, apply a layer of shaving foam (not gel!) to the glass and wipe it away with a microfibre cloth.
