Guide to Buying a Mattress

It’s estimated that we spend a third of our lives sleeping, which means we spend a third of our lives on a mattress! A good mattress is essential to reduce back pain and improve our sleep and health. From pocket sprung to memory foam, the options are seemingly endless, so to avoid confusion and help you pick one that’s right for you, here is a breakdown of what to consider when buying a new mattress.

Type of Mattress

Open-Sprung Mattress - This is often the most affordable mattress option. Springs are held together by a single wire, and the mattress is firm and lightweight. The springs move easily and are all connected, which can be disrupting if you share a bed with someone. Open sprung mattresses often wear out quickly.

Buying Mattress Springs Guide

Pocket Sprung Mattress - A popular and very comfortable option, individual springs are contained within fabric pockets, with up to 3000 springs in one mattress. Extra fillings such as lambswool are often used, and as the springs move independently, there is little disruption to others sleeping in bed. These mattresses last a long time, but cost more than open sprung options.

Memory Foam Mattresses - Most memory foam mattresses use Tempur - a material originally developed by NASA. The viscoelastic fabric is sensitive to your body and temperature, moulding to your body shape as you lie in bed and supporting your back and joints. Memory foam mattresses are hypoallergenic, and can last over a decade with proper care.

Firmness of Mattress

Firm Mattress - A firm mattress is ideal for those of you who lie on your back and stomach, or for those of you with a larger build. The mattress provides plenty of support and prevents you sinking into it.

Medium Mattress  - A medium mattress suits sleepers of all types, providing enough support for back sleepers, yet providing joint support for those sleeping on their sides.

Medium Soft Mattress - These mattresses are great for those who sleep on their sides. They have plenty of give, providing vital shoulder and hip support and conforming to the shape of your body.

Mattress Toppers

Mattress toppers are great value and can hugely improve the comfort of a cheaper mattress. They are available in different fillings, from foam and memory foam to natural feathers and down. They can easily be washed, helping keep your mattress clean and dust free for longer, extending it’s life and saving you money in the long term.
