How to Make a Birthday Cake for Your Dog

Your dog does so many things for you – wakes you up in the morning so you don’t need an alarm clock, keeps you fit without paying for a gym membership, keeps your feet warm on cold nights, hoovers the kitchen floor as you cook and eat, not to mention letting you make friends with strangers – so the least you can do is bake a doggie birthday cake in honour of their day! Sweet or savoury, take your pick.

Peanut Butter Banana Pupcakes

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 banana, mashed

  • 120g carrots, shredded

  • 65g peanut butter

  • 65ml vegetable oil

  • 4 tbs honey

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 120g whole wheat flour

  • 65g porridge oats

  • ¼ teaspoon baking soda

  • Smooth peanut butter, optional for frosting

Make sure the peanut butter you use does not contain xylitol, a sweetener/sugar replacement that is toxic to dogs.

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a cupcake tin with paper liners.

  2. Combine the egg, banana, carrots, peanut butter, oil, honey, and vanilla in a large bowl.

  3. Mix the flour, baking soda, and oats in another large bowl.

  4. Combine the wet and dry ingredients together.

  5. Fill the cupcake liners about 2/3 full.

  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes.

  7. Frost with a little smooth peanut butter (optional).

Candles are optional but don’t forget to take them (and paper cupcake liners) off before giving your dog the cake! And remember, these are once-a-year treats for dogs, not for every day.

Cottage Pie Cake

  • 2 round mini baking tins, greased

  • 500g beef

  • 1 egg

  • 40g porridge oats

  • 50g grated cheese

  • 75g fresh or frozen peas, plus more for decorating

  • Mash potato for “icing” (don’t add butter, seasoning, etc.)

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Combine the beef, egg, oats, cheese and peas and press into the baking tins. Bake until the meat is cooked through – about 40 minutes.

  2. Let the beef and the mashed potato cool, then it’s time to get the canine cake built and iced! Stick the two patties together with mash, then coat the top and edge too so the cake looks iced.

  3. Decorate with peas, slice and serve!

And now all you need to do is get a birthday present!
