How to Keep your Pet Bird Safe and Happy

Whether you’re just picked up your new feathered friend or you just want to make sure you’re doing the best by them, we’ve put together this handy guide on good practices to make sure your pet bird is safe and happy.

Cage

One of the key things to keep your pet bird at their best is to ensure that their cage is big enough. It’s always best to have the biggest cage you can accommodate, but they should have plenty of room to stretch their wings and move around. It should also be cleaned at least once a week to keep your pet healthy.

Birds can easily become cranky if they haven’t had enough sleep, so covering the cage at night is likely to help regulate their sleeping patterns and ensure they’re undisturbed by light and sound.

Socialisation and Stimulation

During the day, your bird cage should be placed where they’ll get plenty of socialisation and attention! Ideally, you should let them out of the cage for at least two hours a day so they can get the exercise they need.

Socialising and playing with your bird are both key to their well-being. Even teaching them tricks can be super engaging for them and help with behaviour. Gnaw toys are also ideal for keeping that beautiful beak nice and trim. Make sure you’re switching out their toys regularly to ensure ample stimulation and engagement.

Air Quality

Keep your little loved one away from anything that may affect their breathing. This includes candles, dusty areas, reed diffusers and even some cookware. The fumes that are given off can be harmful to your bird and may cause them to be suddenly ill after a length of time of breathing them in. Do your research on what’s safest for your pet.

Perches

People seldom consider the effect the right perch can have on their bird and its health. The plastic dowels often provided with the cage aren’t always what’s best for your bird as they’re likely too narrow and cause tension in your bird’s feet.

Adding a few different surfaces such as a rope perch and a branch is a great way to keep their feet and nails healthy. Branches from pet shops will be safer for your bird and can help wear down their nails naturally, so you can trim them less. It’s always best to try get something likened to what your bird would have in their natural environment to keep them at their healthiest!
