5 Ways To Prepare For a Marathon

No matter whether you're a seasoned marathon runner or you're planning on tackling your first one this year, our handy guide covers some of the most important factors to consider on the run-up to your next race. From fitness equipment to clothing, nutrition and must-have accessories, here at The Range we've got everything you need to take a step in the right direction towards achieving your fitness goals.

Create a Training Plan and Set Goals

A training plan is perfect for helping you map out your progress and is a great way to help you set-out your goals. No matter whether it's a 6-week training plan for all-round fitness or a dedicated 4-week gym plan designed to target specific muscles, there's no harm in being prepared!

Motivation is key, so grab a whiteboard and some markers, such as these Pack of 3 Whiteboard Markers, and jot down all you plan to achieve and all the goals you've smashed! Placing this board somewhere that you pass everyday will ensure you can see your progress in every tick and cross. Keeping track of the little victories is key. You may find that recording your progress in a fitness planner is easier than a whiteboard.

Keeping track of your running performance is now easier than ever thanks to pedometers or fitness trackers. If you're bringing your phone with you to track your progress, or just some keys to get back into the house, an arm pocket will let you keep these items secure.

Finding The Right Equipment

When you're training, the right equipment is essential. Running consistently means running rain or shine, hot or cold, light or dark, so you'll need the right running gear to help you tackle your run not matter the weather. Items such as a hi-vis or reflective running jacket or reflectors will make evening or early morning runs safer. Light and breathable excersise clothing such as running t-shirts, or jumpers are important for keeping you cool when you're hitting your stride. When you're facing wind and rain, don't let it stop you from running with a sturdy raincoat.

If you're looking to do some resistance training at home to give you a little more everyday strength, even something as simple as a resistance band or  sit-up bar can make a huge difference. Likewise, core strength and squats from a kettle bell workout are all part of building resilience, those extra bits of strength that carry you across the finishing line.

Staying Hydrated

Hydration is key! Ensuring you drink plenty of water means the difference between a great session or a headache-inducing slog. Drinks bottles such as the Active Sport Drink Bottle, Active Sport 450Ml Cooler Drinks Bottle, Active Sport 450Ml Water Bottle, or the Active Sport Stripe Bottle With Straw are perfect for use at home or whilst at the gym, whereas items such as the Phoenix Fitness Drinks Bottle are perfect for use whilst running. (Most marathons have water stations set out along the course, but it might be worth carrying a pre-filled yet lightweight bottle just in case).

For those with a fitness plan that includes the intake of protein shakes and supplements, then why not check out bottles such as the Protein Shaker or Active Sport 600Ml Protein Bottle - perfect for filling with your chosen mix.

Rest and Recovery

An important step to consider both whilst training and after your marathon, the aspect of recovery is one that definitely shouldn't be missed. Fitness accessories such as the Muscle Massage Gun or the Active Sport Deep Tissue Massager are perfect for relieving tension in tight muscles and are designed with recovery in mind. For those looking to improve their muscle recovery whilst training, then sports nutrition is sure to go down well either ahead of, during, or after your next marathon.

Whatever you goals are for a marathon, whether its just making it across the finish line, running for a cause close to your heart, or just proving you can, the training you do every day all adds up. The little things to make those sessions easier are the key to making it an enjoyable experience. So when you're getting ready for your next race, take some time to review your routine and the little things that make a big difference.
