Enjoy Simplicity with Neutral Home Decor

Using neutral home décor is an easy way to make your home feel calm, simple, and relaxing. If you don’t like fussy décor with too many bright colours and scattered ornaments, then a neutral home might be what you need to feel zen.

Paint the Walls

Wall colours and patterns are usually the base we build our décor around. If you start with a gorgeous neutral paint tone on the walls, it will be easier to coordinate your simple ornaments and wall art. Play with shades of white, grey, and beige for a genuinely neutral look. Pale, soft beiges with a white accent wall work well for a brighter feel, while a muted grey makes your space feel cosy and warm. If you want to add subtle pops of colour, then nature colours such as sage green, pale yellow, or a darker shade of brown work well.

Know your Materials

When keeping things neutral, the materials can be just as important as the colours. Since your eye won’t be drawn to various colours to keep the space interesting, the texture of your room will play a significant role in your décor. Neutral decors lend themselves well to wicker and linen thanks to their simple colours, and both offer subtle textures to bring depth to a space.

A soft linen sofa will be a great centrepiece, whilst wicker baskets on your coffee table offer additional storage space and style. Natural wood, cement, stone, hessian, and twigs are also brilliant accent materials.

Soften with Furnishings

If you’ve got a lot of brown furniture in your room with pale walls, it might look bare and impersonal. This is where your soft furnishings come in! Keep with the colour scheme, or choose an accent colour, such as sage green, to continue the natural feel. Add two decorative cushions to your sofa and gently drape a throw across the back for a casual and cosy atmosphere without cluttering your home.

With elegant sweeping curtains or a fluffy rug, you can create a softer feel. Depending on how natural you want your room to feel, you could opt for a carpet with a shorter pile rather than going for deep, luxurious materials.

Finish with Ornaments

Whilst the main focus of neutral décor is to keep things clean and simple, that doesn’t mean you have to forgo ornaments and decorative pieces. You could dress a mantelpiece or bare corner with a vase and an arrangement of sweeping pampas grass or add a grand cement centrepiece. For a contemporary feel, beige or cream ornaments with rounded edges and abstract designs will add interest without creating a harsh focal point.

Keep your photo frames simple with white or wood frames to continue the look through the home and create a cohesive feel. This is perfect for dripping the neutral tones up the stairs or carrying it into the dining room.
