August is one of the warmest months of the year, so it’s important to make sure your garden is being well looked after and stays hydrated. Watering with grey water or rainwater is best but ensure that you’re doing it late in the evening or very early in the morning. Watering whilst the sun is out and it’s hot outside means the water will either evaporate before it can reach the roots or burn the leaves of the plant.
August is a holiday month, so if you’re going away for a few days, it’s a good idea to ask a neighbour to water your garden or set up an automatic system to do it for you.
As with July, deadheading is a big part of your gardening duties in August. Removing spent blooms from your flowers will help more to blossom. You can use your finger and thumb to squeeze off any dead flowers.
August is also the best month to prune Wisteria. This plant needs regular pruning to control its growth, but this will also assist in its beautiful flowering.
If you're a true gardening fanatic, it's the perfect time to collect any seeds from plants or vegetables you’d like to grow again next year. This is a way for you to increase the number of plants you have in your garden for free, which is especially great for those growing their own food. Do some research on which seeds are best to collect and how to store them until it’s time to sew!

Remember to keep an eye on your plants for diseases so that you can treat them as soon as possible. When it’s damp outside, it’s worth doing a scan for snails so that you can relocate them away from your garden before they eat your plants!
