Neutral Living Room Ideas

If you think that a neutral living room means a boring living room, think again. Neutral designs (when done right) incorporate textures, different materials, and considered uses of design and space that, combined with the right palette, come together for a living room that is not only beautiful but timeless as well.

Luckily for you, our living room furniture collection has everything you could need to pull together that dreamy space. Read on for our ideas on getting everything set up.

Choosing your colour palette

Start by selecting the core shades that will shape your neutral living room. Natural colours span more than just cream and beige. You can choose from other warm tones like taupe and oatmeal, or cooler shades, such as greys or greens.

Before you start buying, make sure to have a good think about the type of mood you want to create. A beige living room with warmer neutrals is going to feel soft, inviting, and cosy, while a grey living room with cooler tones brings a sleek, more contemporary look. Once you’ve chosen your preferred palette, make sure to use it consistently with other furniture in your living room, like the coffee table, TV unit, and bookshelf.

Not sure where to start? A good rule of thumb is the 60-30-10 rule. Use your dominant neutral for around 60% of the room (walls, large furniture), a secondary tone for 30% (rugs, curtains, smaller furniture), and a subtle accent for the remaining 10% (cushions, throws, decorative pieces). It keeps things cohesive without looking flat.

Picking the materials to match

When keeping things neutral, the materials can be just as important as the colours. Since your eye won’t be drawn to various colours to keep the space interesting, the texture of your room will play a significant role in your décor. Neutral décors lend themselves well to wicker and linen thanks to their simple colours, and both offer subtle textures to bring depth to a space.

wicker baskets on your coffee table offer additional storage space and style. Natural wood, cement, stone, hessian, and twigs are also brilliant accent materials.

Finding the perfect neutral sofa

Your sofa is the heart of your living room, so its colour and material can anchor the rest of your room design. Pick a shade that complements your chosen palette. A light beige corner sofa or 3 seater sofa will work beautifully for larger living rooms with a warmer feel, especially when paired with a contrasting rug.

If a corner sofa doesn’t quite work for your space, why not go for a lighter-coloured, smaller 2 seater sofa that reflects natural light and gives your space a more airy feel.

Open up your floor space

A big part of the neutral aesthetic is making sure your space feels calm and uncluttered. Select compact furniture, such as nesting tables, small footstools and pouffes, sleek shelving, and cleverly placed storage, to get the room looking and feeling its best.

A well-placed rug can also help define different zones within an open-plan layout - anchoring your sofa and coffee table as a distinct seating area without the need for walls or dividers.

We’d recommend keeping your floor plan open by spacing furniture well and staying away from overly bulky pieces that could take over the space.

Bring in that comfortable feel

If you’ve got a lot of brown, beige, or cream furniture in your room with pale walls, it’s easy for the space to look a bit bare, so you’ll want to add some flare with your soft furnishings. Keep with the colour scheme, or choose an accent colour, like a sage green or light blue, to pair well with the natural feel. Add some decorative cushions to your sofa and drape a throw blanket across the back for an extra bit of personality and style.

Layering is the key to making a neutral room feel lived-in rather than staged. Try mixing cushion sizes and shapes, and don't be afraid to combine a couple of complementary textures. A velvet cushion alongside a linen one, for example, adds depth without king out of place in your chosen palette.

Getting the final details right

When you’re working with a neutral living room, the little details make all the difference in bringing the space to life. Think little accents of colour, ambient lighting, and touches of décor that bring out your personality. Maybe you’re looking for that breezy coastal feel, or perhaps you’re going for something more countryside-esque. Either way, little pieces like a organic shaped tray go a long way in giving your neutral living room a breath of fresh air.
