Valentine's Day Inspired Breakfast Ideas

If you’re lucky enough to be waking up with the one you love this Valentine’s Day, then what better way to start the day than with a delicious breakfast that could have been cooked up by Cupid himself. Here are some delicious recipes, inspired by the day of love, that are perfect for lazy mornings in bed.

Red Velvet Pancakes

Ingredients: 

1.5 cup plain flour
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
Few drops of red food colouring
Icing sugar, chocolate sauce, maple syrup, berries for fillings

Method:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, add the flour, buttermilk, eggs and food colouring, mixing until a smooth consistency.

  2. In a frying pan, melt a small tablespoon of butter. Once melted, add a ladle of the pancake mixture, and roll around until the bottom of the pan is covered.

  3. Cook on each side for a couple of minutes, or until beginning to speckle with brown.

  4. Plate them up, and finish with a drizzle of chocolate sauce and berries, or sprinkle with icing sugar for a pretty touch.

Budget Valentines Breakfasts

French Toast

Ingredients:

4 eggs
4 tbsp butter
¼ cup of milk
8 slices of brioche or thick sliced bread
2 tbsp sugar
1tsp vanilla extract

Method:

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, milk and vanilla extract. Season with salt and pepper, and pour onto a shallow bowl or plate with sides.

  2. In a small frying pan, melt the butter.

  3. Take a slice of bread and dip into the egg and milk mixture on both sides, before placing into the frying pan.

  4. Fry on both sides until golden brown.

  5. Serve with maple syrup and fresh fruit, such as blueberries and strawberries.

Bacon, Eggs & Brioche

Ingredients:

4 slices of brioche
4 eggs
4 tbsp melted butter
4 slices of bacon
Heart shaped cookie cutter

Method:

  1. Set your grill to medium, and cut out a heart shape with the cookie cutter in the centre of each slice of bread.

  2. Brush the butter onto each slice of bread, and season with salt and pepper.

  3. Lightly toast under the grill until golden, then place them in a frying pan.

  4. Add an egg to each cut out, and place the pan under the grill until the eggs are cooked.

  5. While the eggs are cooking, fry the bacon in a pan, then serve and enjoy.

French Pastries & Coffee

If you don’t feel like spending time in the kitchen on Valentine’s morning, then this is a simple and easy way to have a special breakfast. Buy some French pastries, such as pain au chocolates and croissants, and treat yourself to breakfast in bed, Parisian style. Add some fresh berries, such as strawberries and raspberries, and finish with a freshly brewed filter coffee.
