How to Write the Perfect Letter to Santa

It's nearly Christmas time, meaning Santa is busy getting ready for the big day. With people around the world asking for presents, it's safe to say he's got a lot to do. But how do you let Santa Claus know what you would like for Christmas? Letters to Santa are a fun tradition that lets him know what you would like. A well-written letter will also show him how polite you are. Why not look at our top tips on How to Write the Perfect Letter to Santa to get some inspiration?

Make a list

Start by thinking about what you want to ask for in advance. Having a clear idea will help you structure your letter and ensure you include everything. You may find writing a quick list down on a sticky note or memo pad helpful for staying organised.

Find the perfect paper

Once you have made a list, grab some paper. If you want perfectly straight writing, lined paper is a good idea. But if you are looking for something a little more creative, a colourful piece of paper will stand out and make an impression. Whichever paper you choose, it's always worth grabbing a couple of pieces just in case you make a mistake.

Tools to write

The next step is to pick something to write your letter. Choose something you can write neatly with, so Santa can easily read it. There are many options, such as pens, pencils, crayons, coloured pencils, and markers. You can always combine different colours and tools for a fabulously colourful letter.

Writing your letter

Now that you have selected your materials, you can start to write your letter. Put your full name and address in the top right-hand corner. If you need help with this, you can always ask a family member. Adding your address in your letter is very important as Santa may send you a letter in response from him and all his festive friends. Below this, you should begin your letter with "Dear Santa" this lets him know it's definitely for him and that he's not accidentally opened one of the elves' letters. Tell him a bit about yourself and all the good things you have done this year, he knows all about you, but it's worth reminding him as he gets a lot of letters. Once you have reminded him how good you have been this year, it's time to ask Santa politely for the gifts you would like. Be sure to refer back to the list you wrote earlier. Don't forget to say please and thank you, he works very hard delivering all those presents, so be sure to express your appreciation. Finish your letter with a closing statement like "best wishes" or "love," and sign your name.

Time to decorate

Now that you have finished writing your letter, it's time to decorate it however you want. Why not use coloured pencil or pens to draw a picture of yourself for Santa? You may wish to add a border around the edges using a ruler to make your letter stand out even more. Or maybe you want to add some Christmas trees and reindeer drawings? Whatever you choose to add, Santa is guaranteed to love it.

Ready to Post

Once you have finished your letter, it's time to pop it in an envelope to be sent directly to Santa. Folding your letter can be tricky, so it's best to give it to a parent or relative so they can do it on your behalf. It also means they can admire your beautiful work before it gets sent to Santa. On the front of the envelope, neatly write:

Santa/Father Christmas
 Santa's Grotto
 Reindeerland
 XM4 5HQ

Once you have written the address, carefully stick a stamp on it and give the letter to your parents or guardian to send. If you want to receive a reply from Santa, you'll need to post your letter by Friday 9th December. Don't worry if you miss this date, as you will still get a Christmas gift. Unfortunately, you may not get a response due to Santa being very busy getting things ready for the big day.
