Labour Bag Essentials

Labour is stressful enough without realising you’ve forgotten to bring something to the hospital. With our helpful checklist, you can pack everything you need a few weeks before your due date, so you’re ready to go when baby decides to make their longed-for arrival.

Do I need a Specific Bag?

Nope! You can bring what you need in whatever bag you have available, whether  it's a weekend bag, two or three backpacks, or even a small suitcase. Buying a speciality bag may bring additional stress as you search for the ‘right’ one when you could use something you already have. However, if buying something new will make you feel more reassured everything will fit, then you can do that. This is supposed to make labour easier for you, so feel free to do what you think will help.

When Should I Pack?

Pack your labour bag a few weeks before your due date and leave it by the front door, so if you’re baby comes early, you’re already packed and ready to go. Leaving it by the door will also help you to remember to bring it!

Checklist:

For Yourself:

  • Birth plan and hospital notes
  • Comfortable, loose labour outfit (a nightgown or oversized t-shirt)
  • At least two changes of clothes (new pyjamas, dressing gown, socks, maternity bras, and slippers if you need to stay in overnight, and an outfit to go home in)
  • Breast pads and maternity pads
  • Change of knickers (it might be wise to pack a few, just in case!)
  • Washbag and toiletries (including soap, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, hairbrush, lip balm and towels)
  • Plastic bag for dirty clothing
  • Fan/misting spray to help you keep cool
  • Entertainment (books, magazines, tablets, phones, and any accompanying chargers)
  • Healthy snacks and drinks
  • An extra pillow or two
  • Any medicines you’re currently taking

For Baby:

  • Body/sleep suits
  • Booties, socks, hats, and mittens
  • Nappies (babies can go through up to 12 nappies a day so plan accordingly!)
  • Blankets
  • Muslin cloths
  • Cotton wool
  • Car seat

Top Tip:

This is a lot to remember and carry, so you can always ask your midwife what’s already available at the hospital that you’ll be able to use. Checking with the hospital what they have might also make you feel more relaxed about going into labour as you’ll already know what to expect.

Good luck with the birth of your baby and we hope this list has been helpful! If you're after more Baby and Nursery ideas, browse the articles below and our full Nursery collection.
