How do I Know It's Time to Replace My Mattress?

Sleep is one of the most important factors when it comes to your health. Without good quality sleep, we are not able to heal and rejuvenate properly and it can have adverse effects on our physical and mental health.

Your mattress is a big contributing factor to the quality of your sleep, but how do you know when it’s time to get a new one? We’ve put together this guide to help you decide if it’s time to replace your mattress.

It’s 6-8+ years old

It is suggested that you should replace your mattress every 6-8 years. If you’re nearing this time and thinking about replacing your mattress, it may be worth doing this sooner rather than later.

Visible signs of wear and tear

If your mattress is visibly damaged or noticeably sagging, or if there are lumps and coils that can be felt through the mattress, then it’s time to replace it.

Noisy springs

Springs that squeak when you roll over in bed are a sign that the coils are worn and therefore aren’t providing the necessary support. If your springs are making more noise than usual, we advise you to replace your mattress.

Joint or muscle stiffness

Are you waking up in the morning with a bad back or a sore neck? It could be because your mattress is no longer supporting your body in the way that it should be.

Worsened allergies or asthma

If you notice an increase in your allergies and/asthma, it could be due to your mattress. Mattresses hold a lot of dust and allergens, and while vacuuming and cleaning your mattress can help, it may be worth replacing it if your symptoms aren’t improving.

It’s negatively impacting your sleep

Generally speaking, if your mattress is hindering your ability to sleep well, then you should replace it. Your comfort is paramount and not replacing an uncomfortable mattress could cause damage to your muscles or joints.

Truthfully, there’s no clear-cut way to know if it’s time to replace your mattress. However, if it is no longer helping you to get a restful night’s sleep, then it could be time to replace it. Choosing the right mattress can be tricky, so we’ve but together this mattress buying guide to help you with that.
